State Department updates designation in light of ongoing Red Sea attacks.
The United States returned the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels to the list of “Specially Designated Global Terrorists,” implementing sanctions on the Yemen-based group for their continued attacks against commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
“This designation is an important tool to impede terrorist funding to the Houthis, further restrict their access to financial markets, and hold them accountable for their actions,” White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated.
“If the Houthis cease their attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, the United States will immediately reevaluate this designation,” Advisor Sullivan said.
The White House outlined specific exceptions within the designation to keep providing aid to Yemeni citizens. The Houthi group controls many of Yemen’s most populous areas, and President Biden’s administration seeks to continue sending food imports and humanitarian aid to the citizens while withholding financial support from the Houthis.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the president and his foreign policy advisors as they determine how to designate terrorist groups for sanctions.
